About Robert Daly

Robert Daly
My name is Robert Daly and I was born on the 25th July 1984 in Hammersmith. I currently live in Ealing, London and work as a Web Designer for Dennis Interactive.

I have always enjoyed technology and learning new ways of harnessing its power. These interests led to me studying Multimedia Technology and Design at Brunel University in London where I achieved a 2:1 degree.

I enjoy computing, games, movies and traveling. I have spent extensive time in the U.S and Eastern Europe recently.

Portfolio

Web Design

I have created a number of websites, which incorporate CSS, PHP and MySQL to offer a pristine user experience.

3D Graphics

Using 3D Studio Max it is possible to realise strange new worlds, I seek to expand my horizons using the power of 3D graphics.

Video

Using Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere, I have edited and published videos for multiple forms of distribution.

Web Site Design

RDimages Photo Upload

In the age of Facebook and MySpace which allows millions of users to share their photos and ideas, there is something to be said for a smaller, more personal experience. RDimages offers exactly that.

RDimages is a custom built site that allows users to upload their pictures, tag them and share them with everyone.

Features:
PHP allows users to upload their images to rd.com's servers

PHP on the fly queries the RDimages' MySQL database and retrieves the last upload details

The newly uploaded file is renamed sequentially

PHP creates a duplicate and resizes it dynamically to create a thumbnail

The user then can assign metadata or tags to the image and assign it a score, which are then entered into the MySQL database

Uses JavaScript and cookies to retain user's previous entries to make multiple uploads easier

You can search through all the images in the RDimages' database through a number of categories such as tags, author, dates and more

Upcoming Features:
Ability to create a user profile
Assign friends
Send messages to friends
Restrict user's images to their friends
Email updates when friends upload new images

Database Assignment

In university, I was set an assignment of creating a website that can search and retrieve data from a MySQL database.

The houses' data is stored in a MySQL database and images of them are stored as BLOBs (Binary Large Object). On the front page, there is multiple search options, all values are taken on the fly from the database.

If there are multiple choices, then a drill down menu is available to further define the choices.

This website uses PHP to interact with the MySQL database.

CSS Collection: America

In creating the new look rd.com, I designed a couple of CSS based websites to create a feel for what I wanted.

This one is dedicated to my time in America during 2005 when I spent a month traveling across the country.

Previous robert-daly.com CSS

rd.com runs on a custom built PHP content system, ensuring content and formatting remain separate yet customisable.

There is only one php page for all of rd.com. PHP reads the link and inserts a text file into the required place in the HTML. This text file contains the content that the user will read.

Photo Website

One of the first websites I designed, it features the ten best photos from an event.

With a static design, it works in all browsers and spanned a varied number of events.

Factorials PHP Code

As a challenge by a friend, I was given the task of writing some code that could calculate factorials.

In mathematics, the factorial of a non-negative integer n, denoted by n!, is the product of all positive integers less than or equal to n. For example; 1 x 2 x 3 x 4 = 24

Final Year Hell

My final year project was a daunting experience, so I decided my project should be about the experience. It is set in Brunel's university's deserted lecture center, you discover during the course of the video, that the biggest block to a successful project can be one's self.

The lecture center is modeled on the actual lecture center in Brunel and over 300 pictures were taken to ensure that the two were near identical. The camera animation was completed using the curve editor and many techniques were employed such as bump, normal, luminance, opacity, refraction, reflection and glossiness mapping to ensure realism.

Final Year Hell: The Demon

Designed to be part of the Final Year Hell project but eventually dropped from the project due to it feeling out of place.

In the corridor in the downstairs part of the lecture center you would discover a raging fire with smoke filling the corridor. A tentacle pulses on the floor in which a mutated face explodes out of it.
To achieve the fire effect, a gizmo with a noise modifier was placed down the corridor and the environment effect; "fire effect" was added to the gizmo to achieve the look.

The smoke and blood was created by using a particle system with the particles having opacity texture maps for a realistic look.

Doom3d

Doom3d was one of the first 3D projects I undertook and was alot of new techniques were experimented with on this project. The setting is an deserted futuristic military base where something has happened, but what?

This idea was based on the computer game "Doom III" and alot of work went into modeling the gun and getting the positioning right. The base itself was constructed using "blocks", each corridor is made up of sections, some sections would be have doors, bends etc and were snapped together to create the base.

To create atmosphere environmental fogging was used to create a sense of darkness, havok physics engine was used to create random positioning of debris and raytracing to create looming shadows.

Doom3d Redux

It has always been a desire to go back to doom3d and improve it with the new techniques that I have learnt since then.

The new doom3d features better polygon manipulation, improved shaders and mapping. Improvements will be made to areas such as animation where the walk through the base will be smoother and the gun will be animated with a slight bob to simulate someone holding it.

DropShip

An initial idea for a final year project, it projected a future war in a major city. Using rough models as templates, the animation is a small snippet of what was to come.

Using very basic models and effects to create the impression of a hazardous warzone, dropship is not a technical accomplishment but more of a concept.

Brunel's Tower D

My first 3D assignement at univeristy, this animation is based on Brunel univerisity's computer science building, Tower D.

Designed using the actual blueprint of Tower D as its basis and hundreds of photos, this Tower D is an accurate simulation.

Soldier Model

This is a model of a soldier which is created using splines and the surface modifier.

Splines allow for any amount of detail on the soldier plus smooth organic curves.

Currently work in progress

Mech Model

Another model based on splines and mixed with more traditional polygon objects, this one is of a mech or essentially an armoured fighting vehicle with legs.

Unify Advert

A university assignment to create an advert for a mobile phone network for students. With friends as the stars, it's very low budget, like the network it advertises!

Filmed in a day and around 2 hours worth of footage was edited into thirty seconds in final cut pro.
